5 wonderful things that are better than the internet

As you probably already know, for the past few weeks my internet has been cut off, I know, devastating ey. But you know me, always like to look at the positives so between sobs I managed to do a few cool things.

Okay so I may have lied just a tiny bit: my internet was cut off and I did do some cool things, but I did have a dongle which means I still had access to the internet whenever I wanted more or less but it cost me a fair few internal organs cause I used the first 3GB in a day...whoops. I thought I'd hate it at first, I was well pissed off but then I warmed to the idea thinking I could be all hip and sassy and go to the local costa to use their free wifi this didn't happen, not even once, and then I made the plunge and opened my very own Sky broadband account which made me feel like a proper, real-life grown up for like 0.02 seconds but yanno, if you're struggling with feeling like a proper adult start paying for your own internet.  But, I'm kinda glad it got cut off 'cause I'd been spending waaaay too much time just mindlessly scrolling through facebook, twitter and instagram rather than experiencing life lol so I thought I'd give you the low-down on what's better than the internet.

5 wonderful things that are better than the internet:

  1. Going to the library. Because of all this free time I now had, I managed to endure the 5-minute walk to the library and get all the debt that 9-year-old me acquired completely wiped.
  2. Learning Italian. Because I had all this free time to go to the Library, I managed to pick myself up the best Italian book ever. Learning Italian is on my Autumn/Winter Bucket List so I thought I'd look for  language book and you know how language books are usually crap and as helpful as a cat lying on your keyboard whilst you're trying to type? Well, this one actually teaches you things, like proper sentences and conversations, like me and Shane can now say all of the important things such as "Un tè, con latte e zucchero, per favore" (A tea with milk and sugar, please.) It's amazing.
  3. Going outside. I know, who knew, ey. I've been outside more times these past few weeks than I have in this past year - okay, not quite but you get the gist - and it's actually been nice. Walking in nature does a lot for your mental health, in my opinion anyway, so I've been feeling less anxious too but maybe that's to do with starting therapy.
  4. Spending time with loved ones. Shane and I have fallen victim to sitting there with our laptops or phones in silence. As we both work from home it's hard to switch off but having limited internet we've actually had to speak to each other shock horror lol. Na, we have a great relationship anyway but without the internet, we've been spending more time together fully present and actually went out to watch The Rocky Horror Picture Show which, fyi, was amazing.
  5. Reading. Since the internet has been off, I've needed to stimulate my mind in other ways - I'm not a massive fan of t.v so I started reading Brene Brown - Rising Strong which has rekindled my love of reading. I've also got stuck into some Charles Bukowski Poems and have managed to write a lot more for my upcoming poetry.
We got Sky put in on the 8th September and even though it's amazing cause lol I can watch endless amounts of Gilmore girls and listen to ALL the music, I do want to and have been trying to keep up with the limited internet thing. I think it's really helped every aspect of my life. I want to only use my phone and the internet when needs must and to watch Gilmore girls so I can spend my time present in the world; reading, writing and doing things I actually enjoy.

What do you enjoy doing without the internet?

  1. I've been doing quite well with not being on my phone that often for a while but I noticed that I recently spent way too much time on it again & I'm kind of annoyed at myself. Reading this made me want to get better at it again because just like you, I want to spend my time reading & writing instead :) x

  2. I think I'd panic without the internet hahaha, when it went off in my boyfriends for a few weeks we had no idea what to do, such couple goals hahaha. I loved this though, I'd love to learn a new language, especially Italian! And I've actually been going outside more, just walking the dog, but I've been enjoying it so much, it's really clearing my head!

    1. Haha, I did panic at first but once I set up the sky account it was just a waiting game! I'm glad you've been enjoying nature, I absolutely love the smell of fresh air and the sound of birds singing (well, shouting lol) xx

  3. It sounds like a digital detox has done you some good! Great suggestions for going outside rather than behind a screen, sometimes it takes a break to enjoy the simple things

  4. When I had no internet I re-discovered my old CDs, embraced baking using real recipe books, and definitely reaching out to my friends to meet up even just for happy hour.

  5. I truly loved this post, it's so easy to get caught up in the online world - especially as a blogger! i've made a resolution to read before going to bed, leaving my laptop downstairs! I would love to learn a language - or relearn. I did spanish to AS and i feel if i practice now i can get it back!
